Lina Herrmans is a Helsinki-based artist who works with installation, sculpture, and painting, recently focusing on metalwork and casting. In her practice, Herrmans explores in-between states: the uncertain spaces and moments that emerge when things do not settle neatly into one category or another. She is drawn to the tensions that exist there—the state of suspension balancing between presence and absence, fragility and solidity, the functional and the fictional.                                                                                                            Rather than moving towards resolution, Herrmans is interested in remaining within these tensions, and in what it means to inhabit a space where things can be more than one thing at once. Through her works, the act of making becomes a way of staying with a feeling, a tension, or a moment of hesitation.  Aside from rooting in personal experiences of being in-between, her practice also reflects on a broader sense of a present in which everything is increasingly fluid and overlapping. Her works function as a kind of invitation to linger a little longer with what is hard to define, difficult to categorise, or not yet fully known, without necessarily asking it to become otherwise.
